This 4000 acre nature reserve offers great hiking, through pine, oak, and
shadowed spruce. Ice-cold crystal springs, waterfalls, and spectacular views pop up at every turn. You can camp or rent a comfortable
cabaña for about $10 per person. This is an innovative communal project that could do with some tourist support.
The hikes are really outstanding and it gives you a great opportunity to learn about Zapotec community life. In the early
morning clouds people emerge from the mists like ghosts and the fresh smell of wood fires and coffee along the roadside is
quite memorable. A request for a fresh trout lunch led me on a wild four hour drive to Nuevo Zoquiapan.Outstanding ruined
church in Viejo Zoquiapan on the hill. Ask along the road from Santa Catarina for the trout farm. Wood-smoked fresh trout
wrapped in banana leaf, and home-brewed mescal made for a superb outing.
